99 Designs, The death of the Logo
The death of the logo
In the early 1900’s industrialization in the US was peaking. Everything Americans needed Americans made themselves. They picked cotton, raised cattle, farmed oranges, mined coal, fabricated steel, and fished salmon and crab. We made everything ourselves and it made us the US a superpower among the Nations of the world.
All of us worked because we wanted to from the Life Magazine photographers who showed us the world to the Janitors and Shop owners. We once took pride in our work. It meant something to be a Man who could take care of his home and it was an achievement to be a woman who could hold down her own.
Then we pride and self preservation wasn’t enough. Hilton had to concur to world with American Hotels, Ford started using parts made in Asia and the work of making clothing was taken from the tailors and seamstresses and given to children in Indonesia. Pride turned to Greed and that greed has destroyed America.
Today in 2011 the same Greed continues to destroy jobs threaten livelihoods and persist child labor. 99 Designs has raised $35 Million Dollars to destroy the an entire Design Industry. They use crowd sourcing (free labor) to create the Walmart of logo and design shopping. Every Tom, Dick and Harry can have a logo design for pennies. All they have to do is trick some kid in Iowa or India into believing they may have a shot at earning a few bucks and these kids jump to try; spending long nights perfecting designs to show by deadline.
These kids have no families to feed, no homes to maintain just another iTunes song to buy or junk food they don’t need. This company and others like it that use “crowd sourcing” as a means to create content are no better than the slave masters who ripped children from their mothers to put them up on the auctioning block for sale. The intentions are the same though their actions have changed. They draw out the innocent with the promise of milk and honey then sell to the highest bidder.
For those of you who don’t know, any one who does work for 99 Designs and other companies like it, You are giving yourself to slavery. You can make your design and someone can just as easy take a screen shot and use the design. Making it such that you worked and didn’t get paid = SLAVERY. Yes there is paper work that might say thats wrong but how can it be enforced? Why should it be enforced when you gave into it?
Thanks to this company, the Logo has died its a simple design that might as well be washed in blood.
